Bhopal: Bhopal Bagh won their first National Kabaddi Super League (NKSL) 2026 title after beating Coimbatore Cobra 38-34 in a tense final at the Tatya Tope Stadium on Saturday night. The match remained in the balance until the last five minutes, when the hosts strung together three successful tackles and a super raid to open a seven-point lead and hold on. Captain Rahul Verma was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.
Around 12,000 spectators were in the stands and the atmosphere was electric from the opening whistle. Home fans made the stadium roar with every tackle, while roughly 1,500 travelling supporters from the Coimbatore camp did their best to lift their side. Both teams spent about forty minutes on warm-ups before the match and the coaches held a final tactical meeting.
Coimbatore Cobra began aggressively. In the very first raid, their star raider Mohammed Irfan picked up two points to give his team a 2-0 lead. Over the next three minutes Cobra kept their defensive chain tight and repeatedly forced Bhopal's raiders back empty-handed. By the sixth minute the score had reached 6-2 and the hosts were visibly under pressure.
Bhopal Bagh captain Rahul Verma called a time-out and told his raiders to be patient. The change had an effect: Bhopal picked up four points across their next two raids to level at 6-6. In the tenth minute Rahul Verma stepped up himself and produced a superb double-touch raid, putting his team ahead for the first time at 8-7. Cobra responded immediately, however, and by the fifteenth minute the score was tied at 12-12.
Both teams played cautious kabaddi in the last five minutes of the first half. Coimbatore defender Arjun Reddy made two crucial tackles to slow Bhopal's momentum, while Bhopal raider Sandeep Kumar Yadav claimed a bonus point to edge his team ahead 16-15. At half-time the score stood 17-16 in Bhopal's favour, but neither side had managed a clear advantage.
Coimbatore Cobra struck again at the start of the second half. Mohammed Irfan scored three points across two consecutive raids to put his team ahead 19-17. Cobra's defenders then removed two Bhopal raiders to signal an all-out was coming. In the twentieth minute Coimbatore completed the all-out and built a 22-17 lead, the biggest margin of the match.
Bhopal Bagh collected two points after the all-out and began a slow comeback. In the 23rd minute captain Rahul Verma produced a stunning super raid, touching three defenders. The raid not only brought three points but lifted the team's morale. Over the next three minutes Bhopal added two tackles and a bonus to make it 26-25. The match was back on a knife-edge.
Rahul Verma's display was the product of superb form across the tournament. He finished the season with 187 raid points and became the league's leading super raider with eleven. In the final he collected 14 raid points and two tackle points. What stood out most in his raiding was his ability to read defenders' positions — he succeeded in at least four double-touch raids.
Defence also played a major part in Bhopal's win. Defender Vikram Singh Rathore completed six successful tackles, three of them in the final ten minutes. He twice restricted Coimbatore's star raider Mohammed Irfan to a single point. Alongside Rathore, Karan Devgan chipped in with four tackle points to shore up Bhopal's defence.
Coimbatore Cobra deserve credit for their fight despite the defeat. Their raider Mohammed Irfan scored 11 raid points and troubled Bhopal's defence throughout. Captain Suresh Babu held the team together with five tackle points. In the final five minutes, however, his side made two crucial errors — one raid was rushed, and once they left a gap in defence that Bhopal exploited.
The 28th minute produced a controversial decision when Coimbatore's raider was denied a touch point. Cobra's captain discussed it with the referee, but the call stood. The coach later said the single decision should not be treated as the cause of the defeat.
It was the third meeting between the two sides this season. In the group stage Coimbatore beat Bhopal 35-30, while Bhopal won the other encounter 33-31. The final's outcome had therefore been regarded as unpredictable, and both coaches had said before the match that it would come down to experience and patience.
After the match, Bhopal Bagh coach Sanjay Patil said: "All season we repeated one thing — fight until the last five minutes. That is what worked today. The way our defenders tackled in the final phase is the mark of a champion team. The leadership Rahul showed cannot be put into words."
Rahul Verma said: "This title is not just mine, it belongs to the whole team. We lost several matches early in the season, but we never stopped trusting each other. Even when we were five points down in the final, there was no panic in the dressing room. We knew one good raid could change the course of the match."
In terms of statistics, Bhopal scored 38 points — 21 raid points, 14 tackle points and three bonus points. Coimbatore scored 34 — 18 raid points, 13 tackle points and three bonus points. Bhopal's raid success rate was 52 percent against Coimbatore's 47 percent. In tackle success Bhopal stood at 58 percent and Coimbatore at 54 percent. The two teams together recorded four all-outs in the match.
This was the third NKSL season and twelve teams took part. Sixty-six matches were played in the group stage, with the top four teams qualifying for the semi-finals. Bhopal Bagh finished second in the group stage, while Coimbatore Cobra topped it. In the semi-finals Bhopal beat Lucknow Lions 41-29 and Coimbatore beat Mumbai Monsoon 36-31.
Another major story of the season was the rise of young players. Bhopal Bagh's 19-year-old raider Aditya Nair caught the eye with seven points in the semi-final. Coimbatore's 21-year-old defender Faizal Khan finished the tournament with 42 tackle points and won the Best Young Player award.
The winning team received a prize purse of two crore rupees and the trophy, while runners-up Coimbatore received one crore rupees. Player of the Match Rahul Verma was also given a cash award of ten lakh rupees.
According to league organisers, total attendance this season rose by about eighteen percent over last year. Viewership on television and digital platforms also increased, which is likely to raise the value of the league's broadcast rights next season.
The fourth NKSL season is expected to begin in September next year, and there is discussion about expanding the league to fourteen teams. The national selection committee is also expected to release a probables list for the Asian Championship soon, and several names who shone in this final could feature.
The title is special for Bhopal in another sense: the city has won a national-level kabaddi league final for the first time. Celebrations continued outside the stadium late into the night as the players shared their joy with the fans.
